Leatherleaf Saxifrage
Leatherleaf saxifrage is a perennial found in alpine and subalpine wet areas. Most of the saxifrages are found in rocky, alpine locations. Leatherleaf is often spotted alongside streams, snowmelt seeps, and drainage areas.
The flowers are small and white, but when the petals fall, we are left with a cluster of red seed capsules.
The stems are often sticky, hairy, and unbranched. The leaves are usually deep green and found near the base of the plant. The texture of the leaves is rough and “leathery.”
Later in the summer, we see the red capsules standing up by the side of the trail
