Viewland Mountain stands above Horseflly Lake deep in east side of the Cariboo. It is accessed by following the road from 150 Mile House to Horsefly Lake, then up a 21 km backroad into the hills. Just past the 21km mark, a FSR on the right goes for 1.3 km to the signed trailhead. The trailhead to the regional recreation Trail is well marked. The hike climbs up the northern slopes of the mountain through cedar-hemlock forest to a viewpoint of the Cariboo Mountains and Quesnel Lake.
We could see three arms of Quesnel Lake and one section of Horsefly Lake from the hilltop. The glaciated peaks of northern Wells Gray Park were visible in the distance to the east.
The return hike up Viewland Mountain and back was only about 4.3 km, a good outing for a half-day hike. We paddled Horsefly Lake later that same day.
