Wilcox Rams
One of our favorite hikes in the Rockies is Wilcox Meadows. It starts near the highest point on the Jasper – Banff Parkway and climbs to a high viewpoint with view across to the Icefields. Wilcox Pass itself is a high alpine meadow between Nigel Peak and Mount Wilcox. Each time we hike there we hope to see the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. On our last trip, we took our time to get close to one of the herds and watched them quietly.
After a while, the rams ignored me as I sat quietly on top of a small knoll above them.
On this warm, sunny September day, I could hear the rams munching away as they continued to graze.
One ram seemed to be the leader and the others took their cues from him.
After half an hour of sitting watching the rams, the herd started to move on when some hikers came into the dell. The magic spell was broken so I continued my hike through to Tangle Creek.
