The Gus Johnson Trail is part of the circuit that goes right around Lac le Jeune.   It was originally developed as a cross country ski trail to connect the Lac le Jeune Ski Trails (no longer accessible) with the Ross Moore area.   When the Stake Lake Trail system was developed it was then linked to the Sidewinder Trail.

Map of the Area:

Driving Directions/Trailhead(s):

  • Follow the Lac le Jeune Road south to Lac le Jeune Provincial Park.
  • Although hikers can start the loop at various points, most of us start at the beach parking area in the campsite.
  • Other starting points could be near the Lac le Jeune Resort or from the Lac le Jeune Park East Road, or the end of Lac le Jeune Drive.

Trail:

  • For a clockwise route, go to the east end of the beach area and follow a lakeshore single track which ends up at a gate to the Lac le Jeune East Road.   A map is posted there.
  • Follow the paved road to the Ross Moore Forest Service Road.   Continue along the gravel road for 650m.   At a signed intersection, take the right fork onto the Sidewinder Trail.
  • The Gus Johnson Trail turns to the right at about 0.6 km.
  • There are some side trails, but the Gus Johnson Trail is a double track that goes around the east side of Lac le Jeune, then all the way around the south side of the lake.
  • the main trail comes out onto Lookout  Road.   Continue to Lac le Jeune Drive and then down the hill to the bridge.
  • Turn onto either Water or Rainbow Road to the gate into the campground and back to the start.
  • The distance is about 10.8 km.
