Through Opabin Pass to Lake O’Hara — 7 Comments

  1. Doug,

We did this trip 30 years ago this fall and are looking at a repeat in early Sept 12. Do you remember how many hours it took you to complete the route from Moraine to Ohara campground? We have forgotten but do remember that we came up short and had to set up camp before making it to the lake but we did have a minor ankle injury to one us that slowed us down considerably.
    Any words would be welcome!
    Thanks
    Chris

    • From the top of Wenkchemna Pass down to Eagle Eyrie is about 1-1.5 hours, depending on your speed down the loose material. The hike over Opabin Pass is another couple of hours, depending on whether you cross the glacier or skirt it. The route down the other side is less than an hour, but crossing a glacier is never easy to predict. Once in the Opabin Valley, you can be in camp in 2 hours. So much depends on the groups experience with scrambling and glacier travel. I am not sure how much ice is in the pass now. Good luck.

      • Thanks for the info Doug!  We will head out next Sunday with the weather permitting.
We are looking forward to it and seeing the area again.
        Cheers,
        Chris

  2. I did this route in the summer of ’95 while working at Johnstone Canyon. It was a fantastic day out. We hitched a lift back from the Lake Ohara car park to. morraine lake. From the photos it looks like the glacier has receded a lot since then.
